Prayer walk and potluck for Pentecost, May 27
The feast of Pentecost, which this year falls on Sunday, May 27, celebrates the birthday of the church, when God sent the Holy Spirit on Jesus’ disciples, who then converted more than 3,000 people to the new faith in the crucified and risen Lord (Acts 2). St. Paul’s Lutheran Church celebrates with a festive Eucharist at 10:00 am. Before the regular worship service, we’ll make a prayer walk through the neighborhood, beginning at Journal Square at 9:15 am. After worship, we’ll share a potluck lunch. Please join us for all or part of this celebration. Wear red to symbolize the Holy Spirit!
Zumba!
Zumba – the most fun you can have while getting fit – is coming to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church to benefit our food ministry, the Sharing Place. Zumba is Latin dancing taken up a notch. You’ll sweat, you’ll smile, you’ll have fun with fellow dancers, all while supporting the Sharing Place in providing food to our hungry neighbors in Jersey City. Join us on Wednesday, May 23. Classes will be held at 5:45-6:45 pm and at 8-9 pm in the parish hall at 440 Hoboken Avenue behind the church building. Just $5 will make you part of this fun class, and the proceeds will go to buy food for homeless and indigent families. No special gear is necessary, other than sneakers or similar shoes. Participation is limited to 60 people per class. Call 201 963 5518 for more information.

More Easter!
Easter is more than one day of glorious celebration. It’s a whole season of joy, sometimes known as the “Week of Weeks” because there are seven Sundays of Easter. Throughout April and most of May, we’ll sing Easter hymns and remember our baptism into Christ’s death and resurrection. We’ll get wet every Sunday in Easter! Come and join us any Sunday at 10 am.
Feed the hungry
The Sharing Place, St. Paul’s ministry to the hungry and homeless in our community, will be open on Saturdays, May 19 and 26, 7 am to noon. Volunteers are always need to greet clients, fill bags with food, make sandwiches, and many other jobs. We will also need help on Wednesday, May 18, at about 8 am to unload the truck from the Community Food Bank. If you can help, please contact Paul LaCourtna, site supervisor, at 201-725-7202.
Miracle at sea
On May 6, we’ll hear from Eleanor Anderson (member Jim Nelson’s mom) about her incredible childhood adventure. In 1941, a ship carrying Christian missionaries in the South Atlantic was fired on my a German raider and sank. Eleanor will tell us how she, her family, and other passengers were rescued and traveled back to safety, recounting the tale told in her book Miracle at Sea. Join us for worship for the Fifth Sunday of Easter on May 6 at 10 am, and then stay for coffee and Eleanor’s story 11:30-12:30. All are welcome!
Zumba is coming!
Sharing Place volunteer David Smith is promising Zumba classes in May to help raise money for the Sharing Place food pantry. Stay tuned!
Women’s group meeting
The women’s group of St. Paul Lutheran Church is reading An Altar in the World by Barbara Brown Taylor. The group typically discusses two or three chapters per session. We meet at the parsonage, and usually someone brings a snack to share. The next meeting will be held on Monday, April 23, at 7 pm. See Pastor Jessica if you would like to receive a copy of the book–but don’t stay away just because you haven’t read it.
